Tomatoes have become a staple part of the British diet; sliced into sandwiches, chopped into salads, squeezed as ketchup over anything and everything. Yet the British outdoor season only lasts about five minutes at the end of September. Growing them under heated glass is environmentally insane and we have discovered that, out of season, it is better to truck them in from Spain. Using cold tunnels, we can extend our growing season from June to mid-October, so now is a good time to make the most of homegrown tomatoes.
