Riverford Wicked Leeks

veg and yurts pop up in our fields

With all the reports about football, budgets and oil spills it is a pleasure to write some happier organic news from Sacrewell Farm. The show season is underway so we’re out and about presenting our wares across the region. We’ll be at the Lincolnshire Show this week, followed by the Norfolk Show. Come and say hello if you’re there.

You may have visited us on Open Farm Sunday when we welcomed over 450 people to a sunny Sacrewell (last year it rained all day). We had a good mix of longstanding, newly converted and some brand new customers. It was a great day with cooking demonstrations, farm walks, bus rides (in our open-topped old London bus), ‘pack your own vegbox’, children’s games and tasters for the adults.

Planting continues on the farm with leeks, red, green and pointed cabbage and more lettuce. We have just started to harvest new season crops like strawberries, bunched carrots, kohl rabi and shortly bunched beetroot. Many of these will appear in the boxes and you can also add your favourites alongside your box. On a sad note, asparagus season has drawn to a close as traditionally it is left to grow on to “fern” ready for next year’s crop. I hope you enjoyed it; I’m already looking forward to 2011!

We’re also gearing up for the arrival of our Travelling Field Kitchen next month. Based on the award-winning Field Kitchen restaurant at Riverford in Devon, the travelling version is making its way around the country this summer in a giant yurt, serving up freshly-cooked food from the fields around it. It started its journey at our sister farm in Hampshire, before moving onto London and will pitch up at Sacrewell for an extended stay between 1st-18th July for lunch and supper. The food is getting glowing reviews. If you want to taste Riverford veg at its best book your places now. Find out more on our website and to book call 0845 367 1155 or 01803 762062.
