We finally started picking sweet corn last week, two weeks later than we had planned. The soil took a long time to warm up in April and May so sowing was delayed until the soil temperature reached the critical 10 degree Celsius. Sweet corn loves heat and sunshine, and grew well during the hot June and July but has been stubbornly slow to ripen since the temperatures dropped. The season comes to an end with the first hard frost (normally early October) so we have six weeks worth of crop to pick in four weeks.
