Red fruits, with a touch of vanilla and cocoa. This semi-Crianza style Ribera has a mere six months in barrel, making it far more approachable than the classic reserves. Vineyards at an altitude of 1000 metres give good acidity which, combined with the relatively brief time in barrels, gives a perfect balance of damson fruit, velvety tannins, subtle toasted oak and a long, elegant finish. Close to perfection and so much better than many boring, over-oaked and aged, Riojas. Superb with all red meats.

Dominio Basoncillos was founded in 2000 by José Mari Basconcillo, who has since been joined in running it by his daughters Maria Jose and Carmen. Planted at 1000 metres above sea level near Burgos, northern Spain, their vineyard soaks up plenty of sun during the day, and can rest during the cooler nights experienced at high altitudes. José’s reason for choosing organic is simple: ‘I am a nature lover.’
