Print Rhubarb relish

This easy to make condiment goes well with many things: sharp cheese, roast pork, cold beef sandwiches and grilled mackerel to name a few. Try it with your next barbecue, you may decide it is not as crazy as it sounds.


  • 225g rhubarb, chopped
  • 125g sugar
  • Grated zest & juice of 1 orange
  • 2 jalapeno peppers, or one dried chilli pepper, deseeded & chopped
  • 2 shallots, finely chopped


  1. Put all the above in a heavy pan and bring to the boil, simmer for about 20 minutes to thicken. Serve with meat, rice or vegetable stir fry.
