Lemon & pepper crispy cauliflower bites

These zingy, crunchy cauliflower bites are perfect as a canapé at a party, or as an appetiser or side dish. Serve them with a generous bowl of pesto (try our cavolo nero pesto recipe) or with your favourite dipping sauce. No one can resist this tasty finger food - even the pickiest eaters will love it.


  • 1 cauliflower
  • 100g plain flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 120g Panko breadcrumbs
  • Zest of 2 lemons
  • 2 tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp flaky sea salt, plus more for serving
  • Vegetable oil for frying

  • Step 1

    Cut the cauliflower into bite size florets, discarding the stems. Set aside.
  • Step 2

    Get 3 medium mixing bowls. In the first one, add the flour. In the second one, break in the eggs and whisk with a fork. In third one, combine the breadcrumbs, lemon zest, black pepper and salt.
  • Step 3

    One by one, toss each cauliflower floret in the flour until well coated, shaking off any excess. Then dip into the egg and finally into the breadcrumb mixture to completely coat. Tapping off any excess, place them on a plate ready to be fried.
  • Step 4

    Working in batches, deep fry the cauliflower for 4-5 minutes, until golden brown and crispy. Drain on a wire or a plate lined with kitchen paper.
  • Step 5

    Transfer them to a plate and season to taste with flaky salt. Serve with cavolo nero pesto or your favourite dipping sauce.
