Grilled pears in Madeira

This four-ingredient recipe makes a lovely, simple dessert. Serve with cream, ice cream or crème fraîche.

Ingredients

  • 2 pears, peeled, cored and quartered
  • juice of ½ lemon
  • 150ml madeira
  • 30g caster sugar

Method

Prep time: 10 min
Cooking time: 15 min
  • Step 1

    Sprinkle the pears with lemon juice. In a pan, gently heat the Madeira and sugar until the sugar has dissolved. Increase the heat, add the pears, boil for 2 minutes.
  • Step 2

    Cover and simmer for 5 minutes or until the pears are just tender.
  • Step 3

    Remove from the heat and leave to cool. Once cooled, remove the pears from the syrup and place in a gratin dish. Boil the remaining syrup until reduced by half.
  • Step 4

    Pour the reduced syrup over the pears. Grill for a couple of minutes, until the pears start to brown.
