We’ve grown a small crop of these unusual purple mangetout as an experiment. Try them and let us know what you think.

A treat for the eyes and the stomach, they’re packed with goodness, and have a slightly stronger flavour than green mangetout. Even when cooked, they’ll retain a deep purple colour – just don’t be surprised when the cooking water turns bright blue!


Eat raw, or boil very quickly for 30 secs – 1 min. Snap off the green tops and peel downwards to remove any stringy bits.


Keep in the sealed bag in the fridge until you are ready to eat them. They are best eaten very fresh, although they’ll keep in the fridge for 2 or 3 days

Organic mangetout grower

These vibrant beans were grown for us by John Walter-Symons on Borough Farm, Devon. John converted to organic after meeting Guy, and is part of the South Devon Organic Producers cooperative. He grows organic edamame beans and French beans for us, as well as potatoes, sweetcorn, purple sprouting broccoli, kale, cauliflower and cabbages.
