Riverford Wicked Leeks

pipped at the post

The trophy cabinet at River Nene has been bare since we launched our boxes in February last year (largely because we have not entered any awards), but feeling quite proud of how far we have come in a short space of time, we decided to enter ourselves for the organic industries annual awards. The awards are held to recognise achievements of all sorts of different organic businesses and individuals - from Organic Business Person of the Year to Best Organic Shop. We entered the category for Best Home Delivery Service.

According to the judges, hundreds of applications were received so it was quite a pat on the back to hear that we had been short listed, along with our sister company Riverford Organic Vegetables in Devon. So I made the special journey into London on Sunday evening to the glamorous (well as glamorous as the organic world gets) awards ceremony. Unfortunately, neither River Nene nor Riverford came out winners this time but we are still quite proud to have got so far - next year perhaps.

Purple Sprouting Broccoli

I hope you are all enjoying the purple sprouting broccoli going into the boxes at the moment. We planted about 8 acres at the farm, that should keep us going for another few weeks. It's a real treat at this time of year when the other domestic crops are either dwindling or haven't yet reached maturity. We have included some more purple sprouting broccoli recipes to keep this spring treat exciting.
