Jersey Royal potatoes Grown by Matthew and Phil Le Maistre at Les Pres Manor, Jersey

£3.95 / 500g

Jersey Royals are the prince of new potatoes – superbly sweet and nutty, with paper-thin skin and waxy, cream-white flesh. Since their discovery in the late 1800s, they’ve been grown exclusively by a small group of growers in Jersey; the island’s unique microclimate creates the perfect conditions for this special spring spud to flourish. A whole year’s care goes into growing them, but the season is all too brief. Fill your boots.

How to prepare

No need to peel their delicate, flavourful skins – just scrub gently in cold water. They should only take 10-15 mins to boil in a pan of salted water; some bay and split garlic cloves would be welcome additions to the pan. New potatoes also roast well, especially with a few sprigs of rosemary and cloves of garlic. They’ll take about 40 mins at 210°C/Gas 6.

Delivered from our farm, so wash before cooking. Keep cool and dark on a veg rack. New potatoes are best eaten as fresh as possible.

The Le Maistres have been growing vegetables in the south-east corner of Jersey since 1841. Their farm, Master Farm, consists of around 900 vergées (that’s just over 160 hectares), growing a wide range of crops – but their real speciality is potatoes.
