You know Christmas is coming when dates start appearing in the shops. Larger, softer and sweeter than the other common variety, Deglet Noor, Medjool dates really are nature’s confectionary. Don’t judge a book by its cover; beneath their wrinkled skin lies moist, fudgy flesh with a deep caramel flavour. Our organic dates are grown in the United States and shipped to Europe.
For over 30 years, ProNatura have been coordinating production and providing support for small-scale organic farmers – initially in their native France, and now further afield in Morocco, Togo, Burkina Faso and more (where the growers are also Fairtrade). They offer all sorts of expert advice and resources: from practical and financial support in becoming organically certified, and help promoting soil fertility and choosing the best varieties to grow in each region, to assistance in storing and packaging the final results.

How to prepare
Once you’ve eaten your fill of them straight from the box, sweet, sticky dates also work really well in gingerbread, sticky toffee pudding, cakes and brownies – and combine well with walnuts.
Keep in the fridge and use by the date on the label.
