It is not often that you get pursued by gnats in October. But a little blood is a small price to pay for a largely calm, mild and sunny month. With no sign of the first frost, things are finally looking up in the fields. Sweetcorn that we had almost written off has continued to ripen and will be in most of the boxes again this week. Flavour, which can suffer as sunlight levels drop, has actually improved as the season has progressed this year.
