The leaves have turned and started to fall and flocks of birds are starting to think better of it and make their way to warmer climes. My favourite memories of this time of year (like many children) are of conker matches in the playground at school. For my Grandparents conker preparation in September and October was like a small cottage industry. My Grandma would bake them in the oven (not strictly legal), while my Granddad would spend hours in his shed drilling each conker with a lace width hole.
