Unusually for recent months, conversations have not been dominated by the weather; everyone seems to have forgotten about the horrendous few weeks of unremitting rain and are working hard through the days of the summer that has finally arrived. The agricultural landscape is dotted with bales of hay and combine harvesters are busily collecting grain while some of our vegetables that were starting to look a bit tired and miserable are perking up.

Here at Home Farm, Duncan Janaway is picking the first of the lettuce and hispi cabbage which will be in some of the boxes this week. Growth of the hispi cabbage concerned us early on as pigeons attacked it but, after unrelenting use of bangers, they decided to try their fortune elsewhere and left our cabbage to come through well.
