Innovation at Riverford

innovation at Riverford Organic farm - The Cheese wireWe often try out innovative new ways of working at Riverford. Here are some of our recent ideas which are currently being used on the farm and seem to have worked out well.

cheese wire: The idea for this was taken from an antique Guy saw at a farm sale. The two drums control the depth of a wire than runs 2cm under the surface of a seed bed, killing weeds as they germinate without bringing more seeds up from deep. It helps to establish a “stale” seed bed whereby most weed seeds germinate and are killed before the crop is sown. It can reduce weeding costs by 95% and was made in our own workshop for less than £1000.

innovation at Riverford Organic Farm - the tracked wheelbarrow

tracked wheelbarrow: This gets small loads out of wet fields without damaging the soil. It was adapted out of a machine bought through Auto-Trader for £1000.

wild garlic in the woods: We have talked about wild garlic and have used it in some of our recipes. A lot of people didn’t have it, so we decided to pick it from the woods on our farm so we could offer it to customers.
