Once again the ground is sodden and our autumn plantings of onions and garlic must wait. As biennials these crops produce a bulb one year which, if left, will overwinter and provide the fuel to throw a seed head the next. It is critical to plant biennials early enough to ensure they are well established before winter, but not so early that they think they have had their first year and go straight to seed in the spring without producing a bulb.
