“The best thing about being organic is being in tune with nature and being able to produce top quality food in an environmentally friendly way.” says Clive Martin, who grows our asparagus.

Clive is a third generation farmer and has been growing traditional Fenland crops such as cereals, sugar beet, potatoes and onions for 20 years. In 2006, he decided his Grade 1 soils were capable of producing more specialised and higher value crops. The answer was to convert 500 acres of his land to organic.

“I have to say that despite the difficulties involved with weed and disease control on the organic side, organic farming is much more interesting and fulfilling than conventional farming. The best thing is being in tune with nature and producing top quality food in an environmentally friendly way.”

“We grow asparagus because we have the right soil for it. When I was investigating the organic market it became apparent that there was a shortage of organic asparagus on a large scale. Now I can see why! Weed control is a nightmare and very costly. On top of this you have high establishment costs and can harvest nothing until year 3 after planting. However, with a lot of hard work, we are proving that it is possible to grow organic asparagus on a large scale.”
