Packaging Development Engineer

Department: Production & Procurement
Closing date: Sunday 17th October 2021

Riverford is a complex food business, selling a diverse range of 100% organic products. Our core offering has always been fruit and veg, but as the business has grown, we now offer other products, including meat, dairy, and recipe boxes. As our Packaging Development Engineer, you’ll have an exciting and diverse role as the custodian of all packaging across this wide range of food categories – helping to set the packaging strategy for our whole business, and then bringing it to fruition.

You’ll focus on continual improvement and delivery, against our mantra of ‘remove, reduce, reuse, recycle’ – which is central to this role, and should run through all you do. Your out-of-the-box thinking and passion for packaging will help you challenge the status quo; finding the best, sometimes innovative materials available, and bringing them together with our packing machinery to drive our packaging improvements forwards. You’ll make sure that Riverford leads the way in environmentally conscious, yet commercially viable, packaging solutions.

Supported by the Head of Procurement and Technical, you’ll understand the packaging of varied product ranges, looking to make strategic decisions on the materials we use. Although stock control won’t be a primary responsibility, you must consistently look to drive a cost, product care and/or environmental benefit, so packaging always adds value. We have an exciting range of products (current and in development) which need innovative, best-in-class, bespoke packaging to complement our supply chain.

A key part of this role is the practical application. Once the theory has been researched you will need to regularly speak to stakeholders in the relevant areas of the business who handle the products. These meetings may be in our box packing barn, or even out in the fields! First-hand insight into the real pros and cons is vital to achieving a meaningful, long-lasting result.

This is a permanent contract, 40 hours a week, usually Monday to Friday. Based at Wash Barn, Buckfastleigh, Devon, TQ11 0JU. Hybrid working (remote and office based). Flexibility is required to travel to other sites and suppliers.
